Rich Evans SEMA Challenger Blog
September 1, 2010 Right now, I am focusing on getting all of the body parts made. I recently had the opportunity to go to Katzkin and see how the process works on their side of the fence. Their facility really made an impression on me and it was exciting to watch and learn what they do on a daily basis. When I drove up to their shop, I knew right away that I was at the right place because their building is painted with cow hides! Coming from a guy who paints his building and understands the importance of adding personality to your workspace, I thought it was very cool. At Katzkin, the staff took me though the entire process of redesigning a seat, from tearing it apart to cutting and sewing it back together. The entire seat was completed in just 8 hours including the stitching on the seat. It was really cool to see it come together right in front of my eyes and then to be able to walk out of there with the finished product. As far as the design, we perforated the blue suede which gave the seat a great edge, while allowing it to breathe a little. And the color combination was right on. The Mopar logo and the Rich Evans Designs logo were both embroidered on the back of the seat and the Katzkin logo was embroidered on the side. In addition to the seats, Katzkin is also supplying all of the leather, suede and stitching materials for the left and right floor panels, left and right back panels, rear package tray, headliner, center console, armrest, sun visors, floor mats, rear trunk panels and carpet. I will be receiving a steering wheel from Grant products, which will be black with blue stitching and blue offset suede. This should tie in very nicely with the interior design. I am also working with Stitchcrafters to finish off the interior. They are coming to the table with the art, labor and skills to finalize the interior design concept. As I am gathering all of the pieces to this project and crossing items off my checklist, itŐs just getting more and more exciting for me. I submitted the final design elements for the headliner and arm rest design to the Mopar team and got the green light to move forward. So I am happy to announce that all of the design elements are completely done now. I get more energized about the project and it becomes more real to me every day. Each piece that I complete lessens the weight on my shoulders and makes me more anxious to complete the entire build. I am pulling long hours, but also pacing myself and taking it one day at a time and one piece at a time. |
